It is important to know that suicides are preventable. Global and local epidemiological research reveals that suicidal behaviour is a complex phenomenon influenced by different intertwining factors, such as mental disorders, substance abuse, as well as other biological, familial, and situational factors (World Health Organisation, 2014). The prevention of youth suicides requires collaborated efforts of different parties of the community to building connection with our youth to create a supportive safety net for them.
If additional funding is needed to organize Joyful@School and mental well-being activities, schools are encouraged to submit proposals to the Quality Education Fund for funding not exceeding $200,000.

The Resource Handbook introduces the basic knowledge, teaching principles and management strategies for various mental illnesses in children and adolescents with a view to increasing teachers' understanding and awareness of students with mental illness so as to early identify those in need and provide appropriate support and guidance.

This Resource Handbook aims to provide school personnel with thorough understanding of suicide including its risk and protective factors, knowledge and skills in detecting warning signs of suicide, and practical tips for responding to students’ suicidal behaviours.
- Information Kit on Enhancing Life Resilience
The information kit aims to provide handful tips to help school personnel and parents early identify students with emotional difficulties and seek timely support, as well as to enhance students’ resilience against adversity.

The Package provides practical suggestions on devising school policy, establishing mechanism to assess and review students’ needs, implementing preventive work through curriculum and guidance activities, as well as strengthening the support system for students. - Life Education Teaching Materials
We encourage schools to enhance life education through various kinds of school activities, such as assembly and group discussions afterwards or class period, according to their own needs and situation. We have thus prepared a lesson plan and some resource materials on life education for upper primary and secondary school students.
The publicity materials are to promote the message of positive thinking in face of challenges in life.

- The Committee on Prevention of Student Suicide(CPSS) - Final Report (Nov 2016)
CPSS had completed and submitted the final report to the Secretary for Education on 7 November 2016. The report has further provided the analysis of the local fatal student suicide cases and the various recommendations put up by the members of the Committee and working groups on the “Universal”, "Selective” and “Indicated” levels of support.

- “Defeat Adolescent Depression: How to Support Adolescent with Depression, Deliberate Self Harm & Negative Emotion” Project
Adolescents of this generation are facing multiple stresses but are commonly impressed to be weak in problem-solving and resilience, resulting in emotional distress. Some even resort to deliberate self-harm to release their internal pain and achieve their personal interests. The project is carried out by the Social Welfare Department, in conjunction with the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Team of Queen Mary Hospital, Education Bureau and 5 NGOs in 2014. A booklet summarizing the project content has been published for the public’s reference.
In view of the big challenge of schools and teachers in handling the adolescents’ deliberate self-harm at school, some information has been prepared for their easy reference in case management.
