the Promotion of Values Education:
Examples from the School-based Activity
"Week of Love and growth"

"Week of Love and Growth" is a signature school-based activity for the Campaign on Promoting Positive Values and Attitudes through English Sayings of Wisdom (SOW Campaign) in the 2023/24 school year. The "Week of Love and Growth", which was held within the period of 19 February – 12 July 2024, is a cross-curricular English Week in which schools organise school-based activities that echo the overarching theme "In Love We Share, In Love We Grow" and the six sub-themes "Love Our Country", "Love the Community", "Love Our Family and Friends", "Love Myself", "Love Learning" and "Love Nature" of the SOW Campaign 2023/24 to create a learning environment conducive to English learning and the promotion of values education through cross-curricular collaboration. Centring around inspirational quotes, the campaign aims to enrich students’ English learning experiences and nurture proper values in them through a variety of multimodal resources and activities.

Integrating Values Education into
The English language curriculum

Examples of "Week of Week of love & growth" Activities

Language-rich environment

Participating schools effectively utilised the SOW posters to inspire their students. The sayings of wisdom helped students explore the various dimensions of “Love and Growth” at cognitive, emotional and action levels. The "Seeds of Love: A Blossoming Garden of Growth" visual display encouraged participants to share their thoughts and feelings by expressing gratitude, sharing personal goals, and drawing pictures or sticking photos that capture special moments of love and growth.
To maximise the positive impact of the “Week of Love and Growth” and create an inspiring learning environment for teaching the SOW while promoting positive values and attitudes, a variety of multimodal resources were utilised to engage students, staff and parents in reflecting on the theme “Love and Growth”, including SOW posters and wallpapers, bookmarks, SOWIT videos, instant messaging stickers, gratitude jars and creative writing materials.

Language games

With the support of SOW Ambassadors, a variety of language games echoing the overarching theme and the six sub-themes of the SOW Campaign 2023/24 were organised within and beyond the classroom to support students’ English learning and enhance their learning motivation. These activities included board games, word searches, designing cootie catchers, card games, hopscotch, bowling games and interactive online games.

Competitions

Competitions that echo the overarching theme and the six sub-themes of the SOW Campaign 2023/24 were organsed to extend students' language learning experiences (e.g. contests related to drama, classroom board design, instant messaging stickers design, poster design). These internal competitions not only provided relevant contexts for promoting positive values and attitudes but also acted as a springboard for students to participate in SOW-related competitions organised by the EDB.

SOW Ambassadors

The SOW Ambassadors Scheme is a school-based award scheme aiming to engage students in supporting English teachers in organising the "Week of Love and Growth" and other SOW activities throughout the school year.

Sharing from the SOW Ambassadors
“During the Week of Love and Growth, I learnt about the importance of caring and loving others. I started by helping with song requests. At first, I was nervous about talking to so many people and worried that I might read the words wrong. However, I overcame my fear and spoke confidently.”“Hosting this game was an incredible experience for me. I felt a sense of pride and excitement as I interacted with my schoolmates. Thanks to my partners, as we worked closely together, I became more and more confident.”

life-wide learning

The theme "Love and Growth" was used to connect students’ learning experiences across the curriculum through collaboration among different Key Learning Areas and school committees (e.g. the Science Department, Life and Society Department, Putonghua Department, and Life Education Department). This approach provided relevant learning contexts and activities that reinforced students’ learning experiences and allowed them to apply their knowledge and skills in an integrated manner (e.g. thematic talks, assemblies, visits, excusions) .

Language Arts activities

To help students develop positive values and attitudes, think from different perspectives, and make thoughtful, reasoned judgments, language arts materials that promote positive vibes were used as contexts for engaging language activities, such as song dedications, poetry writing, appreciation of songs and movies, drama performances and comic design.

Reading promotion

During the “Week of Love and Growth”, a variety of reading activities were organised to foster an engaging and inspiring atmosphere that supports students’ development of positive values and attitudes. These activities included morning reading sessions, book exhibitions, parent-child book sharing and readers’ theatre, all of which resonated with the overarching theme and the six sub-themes of the SOW Campaign.
