A Collection of English Learning Activities for
the Promotion of Values Education:
Examples from the School-based Activity "Week of Positivity"

"Week of Positivity" is a signature school-based activity for the SOW Campaign in the 2022/23 school year. The "Week of Positivity", which was held within the period of 6 February – 7 July 2023, is a cross-curricular English Week in which schools organise their own activities that echo the overarching theme "Leading a Positive Life" and the four sub-themes "Cherishing Life", "Diligence", "Empathy" and "Respect for Diversity" of the SOW Campaign 2022/23 to create a learning environment conducive to English learning and the promotion of values education. Centring around inspirational quotes on positivity, the campaign aims to enrich students’ English learning experiences and nurture positive values in them through a variety of multimodal resources and activities.

Examples of "Week of Positivity" Activities

Language-rich environment

A variety of learning resources, including the posters of English sayings of wisdom, trees of hope/positivity/gratitude, book display, acrostic poems on positive values and the "7-Day Positivity Challenge" visual display to engage students in setting goals on leading a positive life and turning positive thoughts into action, were used to create an inspiring learning environment for the learning and teaching of SOW and the promotion of positive values and attitudes.

Language games

With the support from SOW Ambassadors, a variety of language games on the theme "Positivity" (e.g. board games, word search, designing a cootie catcher, card games, hopscotch, bowling games) were organised within and beyond the classroom to support students' English learning and enhance their learning motivation.

Competitions

Competitions with themes related to the promotion of positive vibes (e.g. dance competitions, debate competitions, singing contests, poster design competitions, bookmark design competitions, storytelling competitions) were oragnised to provide relevant contexts for the promotion of positive values and attitudes. These internal competitions also provided the opportunities for students to participate in the SOW-related competitions organised by the EDB.

SOW Ambassadors

The SOW Ambassadors Scheme is a school-based award scheme aiming to engage students in supporting English teachers in organising the "Week of Positivity" and other SOW activities throughout the school year.
Sharing from the SOW Ambassadors:"These activities taught me valuable life lessons. I like the idea of filling someone’s bucket. Everyone can be a bucket filler by just uplifting and supporting others! If everyone does the same, we can create a supportive and compassionate community where everyone's buckets are filled to the brim."
"I've learnt how to give English instructions properly, how to use my body language, how to help everyone and myself to keep a positive outlook on life, how to improve my English and my schoolmates' English... It makes me feel good about myself!"

Co-curricular activities

Positivity and other positive values (e.g. gratitude, perseverance, respect for diversity) were set as the themes for the school-based "Week of Positivity". Schools adopted a whole-school approach in organising a variety of co-curricular activities (e.g. school assemblies, song dedication, talks by inspirational figures, book exhibitions) to create an engaging and inspiring atmosphere to support students' development of positive values and attitudes.

cross-curricular activities

"Positivity" was used as the theme for connecting students' learning experiences across the curricula through cross-KLA collaboration and engagement of different school committees and functional groups (e.g. the Moral Civic Education Committee, the Career and Life Planning Team, the ECA Team)  by providing relevant learning contexts and activities to reinforce students' learning and let them apply the knowledge and skills learnt in an integrative manner.

English Language Classroom

In support of the implementation of the "Week of Positivity", a variety of learning and teaching materials with contexts related to the theme "Positivity" were used to integrate values education into the English classroom. Relevant learning activities were used to facilitate the learning and teaching of vocabulary, the development of reading skills and strategies as well as appreciation of literary texts.
