Speech by Mr. Michael M Y Suen, GBS, JP
Secretary for Education
Dr Lee (Shau-kee), Sir T L (Yang Ti-liang), Dr (Rosanna) Wong, Prof Wong (Hoi-kwok), Mr Poon (Chun-kau), distinguished guests, parents, teachers and students, ladies and gentlemen,
I am delighted to be here today to celebrate with you this grand opening of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Lee Shau Kee College.
Founded in 1960, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups is one of the largest non-profit making organizations in Hong Kong , committed to nurturing our young people to become responsible and caring members of the community. The Federation started to provide education services in 1997, and launched its first primary school in Tin Shui Wai in 2000. The establishment of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Lee Shau Kee College opens a new chapter for the Federation in the provision of quality education.
Offering all-round education is the key to equip our young people with the knowledge and attitude to meet the challenges in the 21st century. I am encouraged to learn that the College spares no efforts in realizing its motto: “Wisdom in Action” by promoting acquisition of knowledge through practical experiences. Students here are given a wide exposure to inter-cultural awareness and international perspectives. Apart from academic pursuits and intellectual achievements, the College also places balanced emphases on the development of physical prowess and the building up of moral character and good manners, promoting the whole-person development of its students. I am impressed by the growth the College has attained since its inception. This owes very much to the support of the Federation and School Council members, as well as the devotion of the principal and teachers here.
Education is not only about teaching of knowledge. More importantly, we need to teach our students how to learn, think, explore, and respond to changes. Under the leadership of the Federation and the school management, I am confident that the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Lee Shau Kee College will rise to the challenge and continue to develop and excel, creating a better future for our younger generation. Students will grow up as self-directed learners and responsible individuals under the caring atmosphere provided by the College.
On this memorable occasion, I wish you all immense success in your future pursuits, together with happiness and good health.
Thank you.
