Distinguished Lecture Series on Applications of Mathematics in STEAM World
Background
Mathematics and its applications pervade all aspects of life in the modern world. The developments in various disciplines, technology and fields highly rely on the use of mathematics. To promote the latest real-life applications of mathematics, the Mathematics Education Section of EDB invites distinguished experts and scholars in various fields to conduct Distinguished Lecture Series on Applications of Mathematics in STEAM world from 2022/23 to 2024/25 school years, so as to enhance teachers’ knowledge of frontier applications of mathematics and making connections between mathematics and real life.

Sixth Distinguished Lecture: The application of Mathematical Modelling in Economics: Analysis of Human Behaviour

Programme Description
Economics is closely related to our lives. You may wonder, "Shall I stay at home and watch online movies with a monthly fee, or go to the cinema to watch a movie on the big screen?" These are the kind of questions involving "calculation and choice" in economics. By combining with mathematics, economics not only explains the wealth gap around the world, or the phenomena like high wages of top athletes, but also predicts whether bus fares will increase in the coming year. Mathematics is the foundation of theory, while economics utilises theory to analyse various human behavioral phenomena. Through mathematical tools such as big data and statistics, economists can assess economic conditions, such as employment rates and inflation, allowing the government to formulate effective policies to promote social and economic development. In this lecture, Dr Paul LUK will provide a brief introduction to the importance of mathematical and statistical tools in economic research, so that participants can understand the interdisciplinary nature of the analysis of human behaviour.
