Pilot Scheme on Other Languages for Junior Secondary Students
(Funded by Quality Education Fund) The Chief Executive announced in the 2024 Policy Address that the Education Bureau (EDB) would launch the Pilot Scheme in the 2024/25 school year to encourage eligible schools to apply for additional resources to provide opportunities for junior secondary (JS) students to learn other languages (OL), developing their interest and capabilities in learning OL, as well as enriching their learning experiences and heightening their global competitiveness.

Objectives

To enhance students' interest and capabilities in learning OL 
To facilitate stronger articulation of learning OL between the JS and the senior secondary levels
To expand students' global perspective

Eligibility and Student Beneficiaries

Eligibility

All publicly-funded secondary schools (including government, aided, caput, special, and Direct Subsidy Scheme schools) that offer the local JS curriculum

Student Beneficiaries

Junior secondary students who are studying in the eligible secondary schools 

Funding Details

Funding Amount

A one-off funding of $250,000 is available per successful applicant school

Use of Funding

  • Hiring suitable external services for providing the designated OL courses for JS students
  • Purchasing learning and teaching materials that support the delivery of the designated OL courses

Language Options

  • Priority will be given to the six designated OL offered as senior secondary elective subjects, namely: French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Urdu.

  • If there is a need and conditions permit, Arabic and Russian could also be considered.
