- What is the objective of this set of materials?
- To equip content subject teachers with strategies to teach language skills
- To reinforce such language skills in different subjects
- To allow content subject teachers to deliver lessons effectively in the medium of English
- To help content subject teachers to design their own language activities to reinforce the teaching of content in their subject classroom
- To provide some subject-specific sample materials which content subject teachers can use
- What is this set of materials about?
- This set of materials contains suggestions and prompts which characterise ways to marry certain English language principles with content subject teaching, taking into account relevant knowledge frameworks and structures.
- They are not textbook materials to be simply implemented in classes. Rather, they are teaching strategies and suggestions for activities that subject teachers can make use of in the classroom.
- What are the special features of this set of materials?
- There are 15 chapters in this set of materials aimed at helping content subject teachers develop students’ learning in different subject areas
- There are a number of subject-specific examples taken directly from textbooks used by students in local EMI schools
- Examples come from a wide variety of different subjects, such as mathematics, EPA, integrated science, history and geography.
- Areas covered range from classroom language suitable for both S1 teachers and students to teaching ideas and activities which could be used by content subject teachers to enhance students’ language skills and abilities. Some topics include:
- classroom language (with lists for both teachers and students and complementary to the lists of English teachers)
- teaching ideas and strategies for teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening, pronunciation and vocabulary
- suggestions for conducing project work
- tips on helping students understand the instructions on test and examination papers
- tips on helping students answer examination questions
