The Government provides 12 years of free primary and secondary education to all children through public sector schools. Under the current academic structure, students will take the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination at the end of Secondary 6. The Government also provides full subvention for full-time programmes offered by the Vocational Training Council for Secondary 3 school leavers, making available an alternative free avenue for students to further their studies other than through mainstream education. For an overview of educational services in Hong Kong, please refer to Education Opportunities in Hong Kong PDF.
In addition, the Government is committed to developing a vibrant international school sector to meet the demand for international school places from non-local families living in Hong Kong and families coming to Hong Kong for work or investment. You may visit the International Schools in Hong Kong website for information relating to international schools, private independent schools, and schools under Direct Subsidy Schemes that offer non-local curricula in Hong Kong.
