Famous Scientists - Let’s Get Inspired by the Life Stories of Famous Scientists
In support of English Language education at primary and secondary levels, reading across the curriculum and self-directed learning, the Curriculum Development Institute of the Education Bureau has newly developed an English e-book titled Famous Scientists. The e-book features the biographies of six famous scientists from different generations and fields of expertise, including Li Shizhen, Galileo Galilei, Isaac Newton, Thomas Edison, Marie Curie and Albert Einstein. The e-book aims to enhance students’ reading skills, promote positive values and attitudes, encourage students to learn from the scientists’ spirit of diligence and tireless efforts, and kindle their interest in science through reading about the famous scientists’ hard work in studying and researching into science and their inspiring life stories. “Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration” – a famous quote of Edison – is sound advice for everyone, especially students. In addition, the interactive features of the e-book, e.g. embedded audio files for the biographies, glossary and answer-checking function, can help students develop their literacy skills and facilitate self-directed learning.
Famous Scientists consists of six reading texts and one writing task. Each reading text presents the life story of a scientist, and provides extended learning activities to help students learn new vocabulary items and understand the text. The writing task is designed to connect students’ reading and writing experiences. Students can learn the features of a biography, search for the life story of their favourite scientists and write a biography by following the prompts in the e-book.
Famous Scientists is particularly suitable for upper primary and junior secondary students. It not only enriches their exposure to the English language, but also helps them understand the secrets of success of the scientists. Teachers can guide students to explore the attributes of successful scientists and help them develop positive values and attitudes, e.g. setting clear goals and pursuing their goals in life with enthusiasm. Parents are also recommended to read the e-book with their children together and enjoy the fun of reading.
